Studio Warming to 'Hulk' Film

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Marvel Studios no longer hates the idea of a standalone Hulk film!

The studio's change of heart is due to the monumental success that made The Avengers a MEGA blockbuster. Hulk showed character growth in his own right and established a relationship with Bruce Banner. This introductory dose of Mark Ruffalo's portrayal is just what the Big Mean Green needed to get back in the good graces of fans (on the cinematic level). Hopefully, his name will be added to the list.

Ruffalo had this to say (via Digital Spy):

"I think they're, for the first time, sort of entertaining the idea of

it. When we did [The Avengers], it was basically 'No.' Now, I

think, there's some consideration for it, but nothing definitive or

even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going

down that road, if we could crack the nut. I think the Banner/Hulk

storylines [are] obviously not an easy nut to crack."

The current guarantee is that Ruffalo will be back to play Hulk in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.

'Batman v Superman', The Real Problem

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Batman v Superman is set two years after Man of Steel, but that doesn't it will be released in that time.

It seems the ridiculous delay of the DC Comics film franchise will not effect the timeline of the cinematic universe. Man of Steel was released in 2013 and Batman v Superman was supposed to follow up in 2015. Until a few weeks ago, Batman v Superman was still just 'Untitled Man of Steel sequel.' Let's breakdown Warner Bros. breakdown in competence.

First! As much as you loved Man of Steel, it had some of the weakest storytelling of any superhero film. It serves as an origin story, categorically, but the narrative was very loose and disjointed. At times, the movie became needlessly existential, on the verge of being convoluted. These negatives sent the film more to Sucker Punch territory, rather than the more acclaimed 300 territory (all films directed by Zack Snyder).

Although Snyder has his style of digital backlots and hellacious action sequences, he is not to blame. The great lapses in the film as a whole had to do with the writing. I agree that the story took some new turns, compared to other Superman films, but they happened to be the wrong turns. Superman's, and thus Clark Kent's, character development was cut short by over extended trips to Krypton and Clark's youth on Earth.

The disjointed narrative overtook the movie during attempts to form chemistry between a miscast Lois Lane and detached Clark. These scenes played out more like a cinematic game of cat and mouse, rather than developing their relationships to each other, or any of the other characters for that matter.

I won't even go into how the Man of Steel sequel turned into a mini-Justice League film, then into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (way to play it off).

Man of Steel resulted in a porous foundation on which to build a franchise. My points were highlighted by the fact that the film received a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and by reports that the follow up film entered a form of development hell (maybe limbo) due to story concerns. The list of cons outweighed the pros, and Warner Bros. had to course correct on a massive scale. What we now know as Batman v Superman was pushed a full year to 2016, which unavoidably delayed every other film in line.

Now that Warner Bros. has their ducks in a row, they must resist the urge to shoot them by moving out of the way of the shared Captain America 3 release date. Warner has WAY more to lose.

The Raid- American Remake

VIEW ALL TOPICS

The Raid: Redemption is in line to get an English-language remake!

Frank Grillo
I saw the original The Raid: Redemption (Indonesian production) the way I see most obscure films (on DVD) before they become 'mainstream,' so I know what I'm talking about.

This is has cast Frank Grillo as the lead with Patrick Hughes (Expendables 3) to serve as director. Frank Grillo is able to play a MFWIC and Expendables 3 should have about the same level of high octane action as a remake of The Raid. Sounds solid, right?

Before we set our expectations, here are the possibilities for this production from best to worst.

Level Scarface: This 1983 classic was remade from the 1932 film of the same name. The former overshadowed the latter and is the quintessential remake.

Level Ocean's Eleven: The remake of 2001 was the herald for a coherent trilogy of witty heist films. While they may not have completely overtaken the original, the film series certainly added a great deal to the original platform.

Level Quarantine: The 2008 film was based on the 2007 Spanish film REC. While the former categorized itself as a remake, and while both films unfold in identical fashions, the films have different motor driving their respective plots. Both films were enjoyable.

Level Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: The English-language shot-for-shot remake did little to add, nor did it detract from the original Swedish production. The high quality of acting and direction carried over without loss of story, although it was a bit off-putting for the American version to take place in Sweden.

Level Superman Returns: This 2006 film was made with obvious good intentions, but failed to connect with the audience. The story was unreal enough to fall into the uncanny valley, but solid enough to get you through to the end. This remake used archaic methods that ended up coming off as gimmicks.

Level Oldboy: This final level may have you saying 'There was an Oldboy remake?' There was, and it failed on many levels, from producer-director dysfunction to disjointed action and incoherent storytelling. This film's noble intentions were highly overshadowed by its flaws, especially compared to the South Korean production. This American remake likely ended the career of a talented filmmaker in Spike Lee.
