VIEW ALL TOPICS

Adam McKay will replace Edgar Wright as director.

McKay was predicted. by some, to be the front runner to succeed Wright on the Ant-Man project. He directed Anchorman, a comedy film starring Ant-Man lead, Paul Rudd.

McKay has directed other comedies such as Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers and The Other Guys.

[UPDATE]

Talks between McKay and the studio have reportedly broken down after an agreement could not be reached. What does this mean for Ant-Man?

The Hollywood Reporter had this to say:
"Adam McKay has pulled out as director for Ant-Man. Negotiations reportedly started in earnest last night, but McKay abruptly turned Marvel down."

Can this film heal the wounds left by Terminator: Salvation?

Some obvious question:
Do Terminators age?
Scrubs?
Time travel?

The only chance for this movie to right the wrongs of its franchise is to pull off what X-Men: Days of Future Past did. Terminator: Genesis must use time travel to throw away its own garbage.

Terminator: Genesis is scheduled for release on July, 1 2015.

'The Arsenio Hall Show' CANCELED

VIEW ALL TOPICS

The new edition of The Arsenio Hall Show is no more!

CBS issued the statement about the sudden cancelation:

“Unfortunately, ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ will not return for a second season; while there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue. Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.”
Host, Arsenio Hall, was hoping for syndication of his late night show, but the early hype of this version soon faded. It's also reported that the show struggled to maintain a flow of guests to bring on.

Fans of the original show may remember singing acts and high profile celebrities gracing the stage. This success, however, would not be repeated.

Josh Brolin will play the imposing Thanos in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy!

This will be the first appearance of the villain since his cameo at the end of The Avengers (2012). The earliest reports, after the The Avengers was released, predicted Thanos to be the main villain in an Avengers sequel. However, it was later confirmed that titular ULTRON would be the MAIN antagonist (The Avengers: Age of Ultron).

In that precious cameo, a stand in actor was used (Damion Poitier).

MORE Breaking Bad?

Bryan Cranston says "Never say never."

Stellar TV hit, Breaking Bad and its main man, Walter White may have more to tell.

When asked during a CNN interview if White had perished, Cranston tentatively replied, "I don't know."

I must admit, there can NEVER (I said it) be too much Walter White.

Breaking Bad ran for five season before ending in 2013.

New Stargate Movie, Possible TRILOGY

VIEW ALL TOPICS

MGM and Warner Bros. come together!

Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin will join these two mega studios to bring forth a new STARGATE saga.

Emmerich directed the original hit, Stargate (1994), and the blockbuster Independence Day (aka ID4) (1996). Devlin was the producer for the original Stargate as well as a co-writer with Emmerich, and he helped produce ID4. It's GREAT news that these two are not strangers around each other.

MGM Chairman-CEO Gary Barber had this to say (via Variety):
“We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original ‘Stargate,’ to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. ’Stargate’ is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.”
The current plan is for this Stargate reboot to lead to a trilogy (that would be awesome).

Jurassic World- TONS of New Details (spoiler alert)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Some rumors confirmed!

The Jurassic World director, Colin Trevorrow, has given the story elements of the 2015 film. Jurassic World will be the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise.

[Spoilers ahead]
Trevorrow released these statements about the film (via Slash Film interview):
"The titular Jurassic World is “a fully functional park on Isla Nublar” that sees 20,000 visitors every day, arriving by ferry from Costa Rica. Jurassic World has all of the characteristics of great theme parks: Luxury resorts with hotels, restaurants, golf courses and more. The only difference between this park and others is that at Jurassic World, there are dinosaurs — lots of them."

Trevorrow made comments about the nature of youth culture and how it's gripped by technology:

“We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. ‘We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?’ Next year, you’ll see our answer.”

Trevorrow dispelled rumors of the dinosaurs taking up a more anti-hero role:

“There are predators and prey. This film is about our relationship with animals, how we react to the threat they pose to our dominance on earth as a species. We hunt them, we cage them in zoos, we admire them from afar and we try to assert control over them.”

Trevorrow confirmed that there will be a NEW,  man-made dinosaur:

“This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles. It’s a dinosaur, created in the same way the others were, but now the genetics have gone to the next level. For me, it’s a natural evolution of the technology introduced in the first film.”

Jurassic World hits theaters on June 12, 2015!

Hit Comedy Show 'Community' Could Return

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Hulu is looking to pick up Community for a SIXTH SEASON!

Community was cancelled by NBC on May 9, 2014.

This change is due to a change in direction by new producers at NBC. The new tone for the network is moving toward gripping thrillers and vivid action, and Community is neither of these (except for a few episodes). The hit, acclaimed comedy was notable for its use of META HUMOR.

Meta humor is to poke fun at jokes or clichés through dry or over-the-top displays of the comedic topic. Main character Abed was usually the lightning rod for these meta humor instances.

There is hope for this gem of a comedy!

Hulu is negotiating the show's return as a Hulu original for a sixth season! This is the latest show to be picked up by a "new media" source; others are Arrested Development (season 4), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (season 6), The Killing (season 4).

It seems with these and other original programs on "new media," this medium is hitting its first stride!

Wolverine in Next AVENGERS FILM? (spoiler alert)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Sounds GREAT, Right?

This is what Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) had to say about it (via IGN interview):
"I would love to see [Wolverine] as part of The Avengers. Because there's a great dysfunction among that team, and I think Wolverine would fit right into that. He'd like that. There's no doubt he'd get in a fight with Hulk at some point. Those two bad, rage-filled characters are going to square off at some point. It would be quite fun. I don't know how much fun to shoot it would be because I'm sure I'd be on the worst end of it, but hey, he can heal."
Now that you're jumping up and down at that spectacle, let me bring you back to reality (begrudgingly).
EVERYTHING that is part of the X-MEN franchise belongs to 20th Century Fox (Fox). This includes any known members of the X-Men, their nemeses, and the ver use of the word "mutant." Since Fox is a corporate competitor of DISNEY (owners of Marvel Studios and THE AVENGERS), Wolverine can NEVER cross this line. I've yet to mention that Wolverine is arguably the most popular character among the X-Men...no, he IS the most popular character. He has had 2 stand alone films, with a THIRD on the way!
Don't worry, I can already hear some you. "What about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch?"
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are sibling mutants who are in X-Men: Days of Future Past, AND the these twins will appear in the upcoming AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (2015), a Marvel Studios film. A deal was made between the studios, because both agreed that the characters are ESSENTIAL to the plots of these different worlds.
Keep in mind, in X-Men: DOFP, Pietro (Peter) Maximoff was never called "Quicksilver" in the movie and his sister was much younger than he was (they are twins).

A BOLD PREDICTION is that Marvel Studios' version of Quicksilver will not be a "mutant" and he will only be called "Quicksilver." This seems the best way to keep the audience from IMPLODING.

BEAMING NEWS: Your Next DAREDEVIL is Charlie Cox

VIEW ALL TOPICS

CHARLIE COX is set to don the Daredevil costume as Matt Murdock, attorney in Hell's Kitchen!

Cox starred in Stardust (2007) and on seasons 2 and 3 of HBO's critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire (2011-12).

His next feature film, Dracula Untold, will hopefully shed light on his acting "chops" as Emperor Caligula. The film is a drama/horror and should contain at least the same level of dark tones as the upcoming Daredevil series.

It will be exciting to see his take on the blind hero after Ben Affleck's attempt in the botched Daredevil (2003) film. While Affleck's performance was given a pass, his costume (design) was not, as it was made of red leather (not crime fighting stuff).

We will hope for the best as Mr. Cox prepares himself for this dynamic role!

Drew Goddard Parts with Daredevil Project

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Drew Goddard has stepped down as the showrunner for the upcoming Daredevil series that will air exclusively on Netflix. Although Goddard was known for his enthusiasm on Daredevil, he has signed on to direct Sinister Six, a spin-off of the current Spider-Man film series.

Fret not, for Goddard's replacement, Steven S. DeKnight, will take the helm. DeKnight is known for his creation/writer of the popular Spartacus series that aired on Starz from 2010-2013. Filming for the new Dardevil series begins July 2014, and the production schedule should not suffer from this change in leadership.

It seems coincident that he is stepping down in the same "breath" as Edgar Wright parting with Marvel Studios on the Ant-Man film, however these events are unrelated.

Battle of the BLOCKBUSTERS

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Choose your MEGA MOVIE

Movies have been an increasingly large part of society, particularly over the last ten years. There are so many ways to view them: theater, Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, and the list goes on. From there you have other choices: traditional 2D, 3D, and in some countries they are going to 4D, where the seats move according to the movie action. But, of all the places and formats to watch these moving pictures, there is a select category of films that have massive budgets and omnipresent marketing. I'm talking about the all-powerful BLOCKBUSTER.

First, let's define the word "blockbuster." During World War II, "blockbuster" referred to a bomb (explosive) that could destroy actual street blocks.

Today's theatrical blockbuster may not involve (real) city wide destruction, but the impact of the word's meaning is ever present. A blockbuster film, is one that usually has a high budget (at least $100 million) and upon its release, rakes in THREE to TEN times as much (depending on the budget). Blockbusters are just rolling into their season for 2014, but a few have presented themselves: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past

A fun part of movies, for the avid film fan, is to see which movies can get to the almighty $1 BILLION mark; 2012 saw four (4) of these MEGA BLOCKBUSTERS. With the number of superheroes and other familiar characters being featured in movies today, this feat is a bit easier to achieve, but still a daunting challenge.

On the other side of these mega movies are the BOX OFFICE BOMBS (bombs). These bombs are movies that fail to gross the film's own budget (or LESS) over the life of its theatrical run. The higher a film's budget, the more risk a film has to become a bomb (The Legend of Hercules).

The blockbuster season, SUMMER TIME, is a great time to catch the most visually complex films (due to their high budgets). If you love exhilarating action and out-of-this-world stories, then your time is NOW. We have had the aforementioned films come into theaters, but MORE are on the way: Edge of Tomorrow, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hercules, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Expendables 3, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Next time you're at the movies, enjoy the season of the blockbuster because these MEGA MONSTERS are hungry!

X:Men: Days of Future Past Review (spoiler alert)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Coming into this weekend, X-Men: Days of Future Past was met with high expectation from a lot of viewers, and I must say it lived up to its hype. X-Men: DOFP is the 7th film in the Fox Cinematic Universe and by far the best one to date. The movie gave use great action and adventure as usual, but the story took it home. If this movie is not nominated for an Oscar, I will be furious. This movie took the complex time traveling story back and forth (which could confuse most people) and did so flawlessly. This movie also takes a bunch of characters and pretty much gives them all adequate (and appropriate) screen time. I mean would I have liked to see more Bishop? YES, but I am fine with the screen time they decided to give him, better than just shoe-horning him into the film like other movies have done to characters (The Amazing Spiderman 2).

It’s evident that the director, Bryan Singer, was determined to tell a great story over just making another movie from the X: Men factory. He managed to outdo his own work within the franchise (he also directed X2).

This film had so many good points and so many interesting characters, but to me the man who stole the show was Quicksilver (and yes he most likely is Magneto’s son). I had zero hope that he was going to be any good, but he slapped me in the face and made me a believer. Another good character in the movie, I would say, was Mystique. I, for one, thought Jennifer Lawrence was not right for the part after seeing her as Mystique in X-Men: First Class, but in this movie she found the zone when it comes to portraying the complex character. Although those two characters stood out, there were plenty more (Magneto and Wolverine, of course) who made this movie stand out.

I also believe that this movie did a great job in fixing of the continuity errors of the past X-Men films (including the garbage X-Men: The last Stand) by completely erasing them in a RETCON. This retcon brought back Jean Grey and Scott Summers (Cyclops), BUT there are some issues that were not explained, such as why wolverine had metal claws in the future after they got destroyed in The Wolverine, how did Professor X come back, and how the hell Kitty Pryde sends people back in time when her powers are going through walls (those aren’t the same things).

One of the main things that got people talking was the end credit scene of X-Men: DOFP (probably the best one I have ever seen). If you stuck around to view it, you would have seen the ancient Egyptian times with some weird alien looking guy building the pyramids while a horde of followers worshiped him and chanted his name. Well, that guy’s name is En Sabah Nur a.k.a. APOCALYPSE and he is set to be the main villain of the next X-Men movie, titled X-Men: Apocalypse. If you don’t know already, Apocalypse is the first and strongest mutant that ever lived. Seeing him the post credit scene almost made me pee a little (even though everyone else around me didn’t know what was going on).

All and all, I really can’t find any negatives to the movie (maybe wolverine had to have bone claws the whole movie). This movie is great and all-around a good but not perfect movie, a MUST SEE in theaters. If you were unable to catch it you still have plenty of time to go to your nearest theater and enjoy this epic movie.

Edgar Wright Parts with Ant-Man Project

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, was attached to direct an upcoming Marvel film, Ant-Man until he and Marvel released a joint statement on May 23, 2014.
(via the Hollywood Reporter):

"Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on 'Ant-Man' due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly."

This is a bit alarming as Ant-Man's release date is little more than a year away, but fans should not panic too much. Kevin Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios, has done enough to earn some trust for this unfortunate occurrence. Mr. Feige has been at the helm for all previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, serving as producer in each. The world, or worlds, that are given life on the screen are parts of a large universe that is the MCU. Marvel is sure to sign another director so they can get Phase Three of the MCU established and running smoothly.

Next year's, Avengers: Age of Ultron will close the chapter on Phase Two of the MCU and it's sure to thrill us at least as much as The Avengers.
