Battle of the BLOCKBUSTERS

Choose your MEGA MOVIE

Movies have been an increasingly large part of society, particularly over the last ten years. There are so many ways to view them: theater, Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, and the list goes on. From there you have other choices: traditional 2D, 3D, and in some countries they are going to 4D, where the seats move according to the movie action. But, of all the places and formats to watch these moving pictures, there is a select category of films that have massive budgets and omnipresent marketing. I'm talking about the all-powerful BLOCKBUSTER.

First, let's define the word "blockbuster." During World War II, "blockbuster" referred to a bomb (explosive) that could destroy actual street blocks.

Today's theatrical blockbuster may not involve (real) city wide destruction, but the impact of the word's meaning is ever present. A blockbuster film, is one that usually has a high budget (at least $100 million) and upon its release, rakes in THREE to TEN times as much (depending on the budget). Blockbusters are just rolling into their season for 2014, but a few have presented themselves: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past

A fun part of movies, for the avid film fan, is to see which movies can get to the almighty $1 BILLION mark; 2012 saw four (4) of these MEGA BLOCKBUSTERS. With the number of superheroes and other familiar characters being featured in movies today, this feat is a bit easier to achieve, but still a daunting challenge.

On the other side of these mega movies are the BOX OFFICE BOMBS (bombs). These bombs are movies that fail to gross the film's own budget (or LESS) over the life of its theatrical run. The higher a film's budget, the more risk a film has to become a bomb (The Legend of Hercules).

The blockbuster season, SUMMER TIME, is a great time to catch the most visually complex films (due to their high budgets). If you love exhilarating action and out-of-this-world stories, then your time is NOW. We have had the aforementioned films come into theaters, but MORE are on the way: Edge of Tomorrow, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hercules, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Expendables 3, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Next time you're at the movies, enjoy the season of the blockbuster because these MEGA MONSTERS are hungry!
