'Legend of Korra'- Season 3 Review, So Far (spoilers)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Season 3 of Legend of Korra is a clinic in episodic storytelling!

First, the art direction of Book 3 is perfect, thanks to the consistency of Studio Mir (they only did half of Book 2, with Studio Pierrot completing the other half). This visual excellence, combined with the voice over talent of the heroes and villains alike makes this the best season of Korra yet. In terms of story telling, this season also surpasses Book 3 of Aang, which was nearly perfect in its own right.

Thankfully, the more mature themes of Korra have persisted through the show, in contrast to the pre-teen ideals of the characters in Aang.

This season answered two (2) of my wishes: have non-benders suddenly endowed with airbending, and show an earthbender who can execute phase changes (lava). It was surprising to hear that Korra is the first metalbending avatar, because I assumed Aang learned the skill from his friend (and founder of metalbending), Toph Beifong.

With the new airbenders, I always imagined that the story would have to take this path. In this Avatar universe, everything is about balance, so it makes sense that said balance would be restored in this fashion. This plot device is so intriguing that I can forgive the deus-ex-machina of Zaheer gaining airbending to go along with his, long-held, airbending ideologies and knowledge of their martial art system.

Since Zaheer was able to escape his 13-year confinement, he went on to free three of his comrades, all benders. Together, the four make up the Red Lotus, an off-shoot of the White Lotus, who seek to bring TOTAL equality through the world by eliminating powerful leaders (monarchies, government). The members of the Red Lotus are all very layered and present dynamic character interactions despite their limited amounts of screen time.

There is earthbender, Ghazan, who can bend rather large amounts of earthen material, although he has not shown an ability to metalbend. Instead, Ghazan can phase-change the rocks he bends into lava (making him the only non-Avatar bender to do so). He has even turned patches of solid ground into lava pools or rivers for protection. When fighting another earthbender, he can turn their rocks into lava and bend them back to his opponent. He is a very straight forward man and does what his leader, Zaheer, asks of him.

P'Li is a firebender who has the same ability as Combustion Man from the Aang series, however, she can shoot her explosive beams around corners and change the direction of her blasts at will. She is very tall, standing at six feet, eight inches, and is in a romantic relationship with Zaheer.

The fourth member is Ming-Hua, an armless waterbender. Because she lacks arms, her waterbending form lacks the fluidity of most waterbenders. She is, instead, very rigid, yet powerful and highly skilled in combat. Ming-Hua can perform several advanced techniques simultaneously by bending the water to be her arms, or any melee weapon. She fights with more ferocity than any other character, which was evident in how she took out both Mako and Bolin by herself.

Book 3 took the time to develop Lin Beifong's character. It's revealed that she has a sister (who caused the scar on her face) and that both women have different fathers that neither one knows. This was, possibly, a sly attempt to describe Toph's rebellious nature as a young woman and her disregard for certain societal norms.

Team Avatar is looking to have an epic clash with the Red Lotus in the season finale. Hopefully, we won't be robbed of a great showdown like in Book 1 (with Amon), and it would be great to avoid a convoluted conclusion like in Book 2 (with Unalaq).

Thus far, this is looking like the single greatest season of the franchise!

Starship Comics Universe

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Here is the rundown on the Starship Comic Universe (SSU)!

The SSU will bring original, interconnecting stories that will rival those of Marvel and DC. Our focus will not be on retconning or recycling our characters, but we will start worlds that will continue to expand. All of these connections in the SSU will lead to various team ups and crossovers with super-heroes or super-villains. With more villains, come more conflicts and chances for character interactions to grip the audience (whether benevolent or violent).

Project Zero:
"Ken Saunders is a hopeful entrepreneur/inventor who could not get his inventions to work. Then, one day, he crosses paths with the extraterrestrial Weapon Zero suit and it changed his life. In his hands, the suit becomes Project Zero as he learns how to deal with its immense power and protect himself from General O'Connor's army as well as his overzealous nemesis, Steven Jones."
Lone Hood:
"In the city of New Port, crime, drugs, and poverty run rampant through the streets. The citizens do anything they can to survive the grime, and Leon Hall is no different. Leon becomes an urban legend, called Lone Hood, for how he survives like the Lone Ranger and to emphasize his skills as a thief like Robin Hood. He does this not only for himself, but for his younger sister, Emily, until she is tragically killed. Now, Leon uses the Lone Hood mantel to take down the men behind his sister’s death and must decide on answering a higher calling in the process."
Magic City:
"It's the entertainment capital of the world, where thousands of acts attempt to make it big in the spot light, one of them being Paige 'Bella' Stevens. She hopes to become a headlining magic act, but lacks the ability to do so, until one day she receives an ancient artifact that gives her the power to be the greatest magician of all time. Now she must master her new abilities to help stop the new evils that she, inadvertently, helped create."
Game of Dartz:
"The drug game has become the world’s most lucrative business. Kingpin Dartz is at the top of the food chain until one day, he is betrayed by the members of his inner circle and left for dead.  Having survived the attack, Dartz returns to take revenge on those who betrayed him and to take back his empire. Will he realize that evil begets evil or will he continue on a path destruction and tyranny?"
Gods:
"Gods takes place thousands of years ago, near the beginning of the SSU’s formation. This series will follow our hero as he realizes that although he was raised amongst the humans, he was created a god. Now, he must become one with his powers to protect the humans he grew to love from the god-like being that threatens their mortal world."

'Young Justice' RETURNING?

VIEW ALL TOPICS

The wrongfully canceled Young Justice is returning to TV!

The only detail for the future of Young Justice is that it will return only as a crossover with...Teen Titans Go!

WAIT! This is not good news! We were all tricked the first time when we got news of Teen Titans return, but ended up with a show that only babies could like. The animation style is childish, the content is moronic and the color schemes are visually distasteful.

Why would Warner Bros. trash a second series in the same fashion as was done with Teen Titans? Could we at least get a Powerpuff Girls type of revival?

'Batman v Superman'- NEW RELEASE DATE!

VIEW ALL TOPICS

They did it, March 25, 2016!

Courtesy of eyelostmymarbles
After much hype brought about by the upcoming Batman v Superman moving to the SAME day as Captain America 3, we were all left wondering. The overwhelming response was that one of the films would have to move to avoid box-office cannibalization.

We all know DC has WAY more to lose than Marvel, meaning they were more likely to move away form the shared date anyway. Judging by the story and characters in the Batman v Superman film, it's almost a standalone installment compared to what Captain America 3 is to its respective franchise/cinematic universe.

Now, let's discuss the NEW date, March 25, 2016. This is squarely out of the contemporary Blockbuster Season (May-August), but in recent years, both April and even March release dates have attained solid box office numbers. Examples include: The Lego Movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Divergent, Noah, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

'TMNT' Still Photos- Why They Should Worry You

VIEW ALL TOPICS

CGI has a time and place, but this looks mistimed and misplaced.

The official synopsis:
"The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan."
It looks like Nickelodeon Pictures let the interns do the graphics designs.
Raphael's anatomical proportions are...off. Their lair is very obviously digitized. Uncanny valley is calling.
Oh, look! A wall of boom-boxes! Is this a Step-Up crossover film? Wait! TEENAGE Turtles...it's 2014. That should be a wall of iPods [tisk, tisk].
CGI Armor? Is there even a physical model of the Shredder's Armor?
This looks cool, but it's all motion capture...
Is this film live-action? If so, why? This scene is 100% computer driven. Uncanny valley is calling.
Nice use of motion blur on CGI Master Splinter's hand. The 1990 film is starting to okay compared to these photos...and that's not okay.

'Terminator 5'- Now in Post-Production!

Terminator: Genisys will hit theaters in 2015!

Let's be real...we all need a trailer before we can think about buying in to this film. As of now, there is NO evidence that Terminator: Genisys will be any good. The name alone is a head scratcher and early photos and plot details involve a 60-year-old Terminator. It's plausible that the Terminator has aged since organic stem cells cover his metal death body, BUT that particular T-800 perished in Terminator: Rise of the Machines
The fifth installment will hit theaters on July 1, 2015.

Trouble for 'Assassin's Creed' Film

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Michael Fassbender has dropped out of the Assassin's Creed project!

Reports credit Fassbender's departure to Sony Pictures (owner of the film rights) wanting to stray from the story provided by the source material.

Fassbender is known for his role in the most recent X-Men films as Magneto, and this was to be his franchise to flourish in as well. He was in line to play the game's main character in the action packed adaptation.

Assassin's Creed is slated for an August 2015 release.

Watch Dogs- Sequel (VIDEO)

The next installment of the Watch Dogs video game will be set in Camden, New Jersey!

The following picture was released by the official Watch Dogs Twitter account:

This message in this picture is a FACT. The city of Camden is completely rigged with cameras and powerful hidden microphones. These microphones can accurately calculate the position of sounds, such as gunshots.

Many citizens have complained that the surveillance has made their city a police state and that their right to privacy is being dismantled.

The First MEGA-Blockbuster of 2014!

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Transformers: Age of Extinction has crossed the $1B-mark!

As terrible as this film is, it has become the first of the year to reach MEGA BLOCKBUSTER status. Many had high hopes on this feat for the latest installment of Planet of the Apes, but no such luck for the best film of 2014

Part of this film's box office success comes from a total lack of competition in this seemingly disappointing film year. Will they have the Academy Awards next year?

Guardians of the Galaxy- Review (spoilers)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Marvel's summer blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, a team that most of you might not have heard of.

Coming into this weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy was probably one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, let alone the year, and, I must say, it did its job of providing a fun and entertaining film. I would not put this movie on the level of other comic book movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier or X-Men: DOFP, but this film shows that comic book movies are getting better and better. This film had a few good fight scenes, and some good space craft fights throughout, and all really gave the movie more of a space/sci-fi feel, rather than a "mere" superhero movie.

GOTG had its like-able characters and also its not so like-able. The main character that stole the show (surprisingly) was Rocket. Many people feared Rocket would come off as being "cheesy" and stupid (after all, he is a talking raccoon), but he was probably the most exciting hero. Even though the movie centers on Star-Lord, as he tries to put together the team and save the galaxy, Rocket was the one who kept the people entertained and kept the laughs going.

However, for every positive, there is a negative in this case. Drax, the Destroyer was pretty flat character. He was obviously the brawn of the team and pretty much anything he said was just some stupid joke, and it didn't really help that the actor, Dave "The Animal" Batista, isn't a very experienced talent. As for the villain, Ronan was the "Dark Elf" of this film (a useless character, who is defeated pretty easily). He starts off as a guy who wants Thanos (yes he is in the movie) to kill the planet Zandar, but after Ronan realizes he can destroy Zandar with the infinity stone, he decides to do it himself. With all that power you would think it should take and army to stop him, but the Guardians easily get the stone away from him and kill him with it [Yawn]. Where are the days of the big ending fight? Maybe we will get it whenever Thanos comes again...

So, overall the movie is a must see in theaters so you can get the full experience. GOTG will keep you entertained, make you laugh, maybe cry and all that good stuff, plus it should hold you over until Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out next year. As for the post credit scene, I'd skip it.  The scene doesn't tell anything about the future of the MCU, but it's more of a funny ending (unless you want to see Howard the Duck then stay for sure).

Have you seen GOTG? What did you think?
