'Power Rangers' Reboot Gets Writers!

VIEW ALL TOPICS

The writers of X-Men: First Class will pen the new Power Rangers script!

Writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) have been hired to pen the Power Rangers script. They will also be working with Roberto Orci, who will serve as executive producer.

The two writers have worked with Orci before on the sci-fi TV show Fringe. Orci recently departed with Sony and its current Spiderman franchise to direct Star Trek 3, but it looks like he will also be resurrecting this once dominant franchise.

This film would be the third installment after Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997). A Power Rangers Time Force film was in the works, but poor performance in Turbo ended all plans for future installments.

Unlike many other franchises, of late, this will be a reboot rather than a re-invented sequel. Only the core mythos of the Power Rangers will be preserved, but there will be original characters and story elements.

The film is slated for a 2016 release!

What 'Batman & Robin,' 'Man of Steel,' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Have in Common

VIEW ALL TOPICS

These theatrical adaptations have more in common than you think!

Each of these films was a major blow to their respective franchises.

Batman & Robin (1997) was so awful, that it stalled the successive films and almost the superhero film genre. Another Batman film wasn't released until the Christopher Nolan reboot in 2005 (Batman Begins).

Man of Steel was hindered by overzealous, existential storytelling and carbon copy action sequences. It failed to gross even $700 million and caused a major stall in the follow-up films.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a mindless film, unfortunately. Every trailer leading up to the film showed more promise than the one before, and it seemed as though Jamie Foxx (playing Electro) would steal the show. This was the case, but only because he played the only solid character. The franchise is currently dealing with turmoil comparable to that in the Man of Steel franchise.

Thor is a Woman Now

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Marvel Comics has introduced a new, female, Thor character?

She is not the "son of Odin," but a different character altogether.

Marvel Comics had this to say [via Variety]:

“No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge who will be worthy of the name Thor.”
This change was made to appeal to young women, a demographic that is under represented in comics.

Keep in mind how offensive it is to change the color/gender of a character simply to appease a certain group. It would be more genuine to create a NEW character with similar ideals/abilities. An example is how She-Hulk was created as a counterpart of the Hulk. This not only preserved the original, but also added to the overall universe and stories of the characters. The same goes for the ethnic diversity of the earth-based Green Lanterns. Hal Jordan's skin color was not changed, but a new character was created, in John Stewart, with his own backstory and set of challenges.

In the case of the new Thor, further offense is incurred because Norse Mythology is a religion, and there are no religions that would approve of their gods' genders being altered to serve a contrived purpose.

Even more perplexing is why a female character could not be given her own identity after the Korbinite, Beta Ray Bill, was allowed his own existence as a being worthy of Mjolnir. He was also given his own hammer, called Stormbreaker.

This whole thing begs one question: will her last name be Odinson?

It seems this re-invented sequel is taking the same marketing approach as the very first Jurassic Park film. They are releasing a lot of merchandise for the upcoming film, which should start up a solid buzz leading up to the Jurassic World release!

5 Reasons the New Show 'The Strain' is a Hit!

VIEW ALL TOPICS

The new FX show The Strain is the second greatest show on TV!

1. The Strain is second only to The Walking Dead in how well the story is told through brutal deaths and graphic violence.

2. This show is a cross between Blade 2 (directed by del Toro) and Dead Space: Downfall
Reaper from Blade 2

3. This marks the long awaited return of scary vampiric themes.
Rave scene from Blade

4. Like The Walking Dead, the story is already developed from books (written by Del Toro and Chuck Hogan), so no desperate "writers-ex-machina" stuff. This ends more TV shows than you could count.

5. This gives us both sides of the conflict. It's terrible not knowing what's going on in a show...

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- Review (spoiler alert)

VIEW ALL TOPICS

This could become the year's first MEGA BLOCKBUSTER!

Let’s be clear. Before I saw this movie, Edge of Tomorrow was, by far, the best movie of the year, but this film clearly surpassed even that.

Here’s why:

This is the first movie of the year to focus on the eponymous NONHUMAN characters (unlike Transformers).  We get to see the ape society and real character dynamics between the apes, mostly between Caesar, Blue Eyes, and Koba. Blue Eyes, Caesar’s son, is introduced in this installment of Apes, which is set 10 years after the first film. He is a capable individual who sometimes gets ahead of himself in the heat of the moment.

This was revealed in the first scene of the film when Caesar led the apes on a deer hunt. As the hunt drew to a close, the he and his son were separated from the group. Caesar told his son to be still, but he went further astray and crossed paths with a huge bear paw.  His father comes to his aid, but to little avail, as the bear inches closer with its power paw swipes. Caesar then roars for help and his “general,” Koba responds. Caesar tries to “get big” with the bear, but the bear reciprocates, ready to deal the final blow.  Just at that moment, Koba spears the bear and kills it. Caesar is thankful, and Koba tells Blue Eyes that his new scars are signs of strength.

This is possibly the greatest “opening image” of a film when compared to the events to follow.

A large part of the conflict comes when humans wander into ape territory while attempting to repair a hydroelectric dam. Caesar trusts that the humans will not disturb his ape family, but his right hand, Koba, hates Caesar’s attitude and sees it as weakness. This disagreement drives a wedge between the two as the story develops. Koba was experimented on during the events of the first film, and these traumas poisoned him with hatred for ALL humans. His body is riddled with scars from the scientists testing, including his trademark eye scar.

Through the course of Koba’s boiling hatred, he collects several automatic rifles from the humans’ armory and recruits Caesar’s son, Blue Eyes, into his devious plot. His conflict with Caesar comes to a head when the two fight at the dam over how to deal with the humans. Koba loses, and neglects to tell Caesar of the guns he now controls.

As Koba exits, the humans get the hydroelectric power going and there’s a moment of relief.

In the cover of night, Koba attacks one the humans who shot at Rocket’s son, Ash earlier in the film. Because of this man’s behavior, he was ordered to wait in the truck until the other humans returned.

Koba, now enacting his plan, uses a rifle to shoot Caesar from an unnoticed position. The leader falls to his apparent death, and meanwhile, a fire set earlier by Koba blazes out of control.

Koba takes charge amid the confusion and panic and orders the apes to attack all humans. The apes rush to the human city where they seize the armory. After this the go to the main gates and start all wild shootout battle with the humans. The humans keep the apes at bay for only so long before Koba hijacks a tank and rolls through the front gates. The apes then overpower the humans and cage them all, along with Caesar’s former ape council.

This attack is the absolute climax of the film. Everything that everyone believes in collides in a violent fashion as Koba’s, Caesar’s and the humans’ wills go from cerebral disagreements to visceral destruction.

Koba then orders the capture of humans who escaped the initial assault, and even kills Ash when he refuses to kill a human because “Caesar wouldn’t want this.” Koba’s tactics strike fear into the apes, which is the opposite of how Caesar chose to lead.

The humans at the apes’ home emerge from the forest and stumble across a wounded, but living Caesar [obvious ‘Caesar lives’ imagery]. The humans drive Caesar to his home from the first film, and then plan to go to the ape-controlled human city to get tools for Caesar’s injury. One of the humans run’s into Blue Eyes, who doesn’t want to continue Koba’s incursion, so both go back to Caesar.

After the Caesar group gets back together, they go confront Koba on the large tower in the human city. Unbeknownst to the apes the tower is rigged with explosives, thanks to the human leader.

This takes us to the showdown on the tower: Caesar versus Koba. Their battle is vicious and interrupted when the bombs are detonated.  With a chance to save Koba, Caesar instead drops him to his death at the bottom of the tower.

The ape’s human allies warn them of incoming human forces that can wipeout the apes and tell them to flea. With the ape society in ruins, Caesar decides the apes will stay and fight.

The film ends with the apes bowing before Caesar in preparation for war. This will take us to the next installment, which is under the working title Planet of the Apes.

My only complaint in this film is that there is no gorilla character. There is an orangutan, bonobo, and several chimpanzees, but no ‘Attar-like’ character (since Buck was killed in the previous film) to ‘hold it down.’

Batman v Superman: Villain Lineup

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Batman v Superman starts more questions than it answers with this villain list...

NOTE: You may want to read The Real Problem, before you continue.

Here are the villains:

Victor Zsazs
Psycho with a knife. This picture shows the character's appearance in Batman Begins.

Morgan Edge
Media mogul and new owner of the Daily Planet. In the New 52 continuity is a an African American man. The picture shows Rutger Hauer playing the character in Smallville (a show that brought shame to Superman). Since Boris Kodjoe could not be reached to play Lex Luthor, he MUST play Morgan Edge.

Here is Boris:

David Cain
Generic comic book assassin. The only acceptable casting choice for this character is Dean Cain. He played Superman in Lois &Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Amanda Waller
She is not Amanda Waller, but she should be.

Robbie Amell Joins Cast of 'The Flash'

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Robbie Amell will play Ronnie Raymond in The CW's The Flash

Amell was the star of The CW's Tomorrow People, but that show was trash, so it was cancelled. Now he returns to the network and will rejoin producer, Greg Berlanti (from Tomorrow People).

Even though everything on The CW is subpar, let's hope The Flash is closer to its counter part, Arrow, than it is to Tomorrow People

Amell's character, Ronnie, works at S.T.A.R. Labs and plays a role in how Barry Allen (The Flash) gets his powers. In the comics, Ronnie is half of the alter ego, Firestorm.

Berlanti had this to say:

"[Executive produers] Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and I designed the pilot and series to include Ronnis (aka Firestorm) -- and to actually have someone with Robbie's talent playing the role is beyond exciting. We can't wait for viewers and fans of the characters to check it out."

There's no word whether this version of Firestorm will be a combined character, which brings up some diversity questions for this show.

'The Leftovers'- Worst Show Ever?

VIEW ALL TOPICS

Is HBO's new show, The Leftovers, too poorly put together to be viewed by human eyes?

If you haven't seen the HBO show The Leftovers, then you can just read along about how terrible it is.

Here is the basic premise: About 2% of the world's population suddenly vanishes.

So far, so good, but here is where they lose me. There is a 2-year time skip before the main events of the show occur. THAT'S DUMB, because the characters all reach their boiling points TWO YEARS after the event (called the Rapture). It's as if everyone is finally ready to express how they feel long after the fact.

Imagine The Walking Dead if the incubation period for infection was two years, and no one gets prepared for the zombie apocalypse in the meantime (lame).

This show should have taken the "Under the Dome" approach; "event" happens, and everyone gradually goes mad under the circumstances.

Besides this egregious lack of story, there is also an amalgam of highly confusing side plots. Honestly, by the end of the first episode, the whole thing looks like a mash up of old Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episodes (is that how the show got its name?). But like many jumbled messes, this one stinks.

This goes to show, not all books can make it to the big a screen.

10 Best Anime Fighting Styles/Techniques

VIEW ALL TOPICS

These fighters use styles that can only be described as fantastic!

1. Black Leg Style
No need to get your hands bloodied with this fighting style. This is like a combination of taekwondo kicks and some capoeira movements. Sanji uses this style to end many enemies in One Piece.

2. Black Dragon Hellfire (Dragon of the Darkness Flame)
Hiei used the flame technique on a demon who was made of fire and turned the demon into an ash shadow. It was a complete MFWIC moment! He is YuYu Hakusho's runner up for "MFWIC to steal the show" behind Toguro.

3. Hokuto Shinken (Divine Fist of the North Star)
Kenshiro uses his lightning fast strikes to deliver explosive nerve blows. This martial art is so deadly and violent, that one touch spells the bloody end. With hokuto shinken, a MFWIC can transcend in to an untouchable MFWIC.

4. Angel Arm
Angel Arm
Vash the Stampede has a Colt .45, a submachine gun, and the Angel Arm, but the Angel Arm is what can cause citywide devastation. He fails the MFWIC test only because of his ne'er-do-well attitude at times. His twin brother, Millions Knives, on the other hand, is insane and passes the MFWIC test with flying colors. The same goes for Vash's ally, Wolfwood.

5. Kamui
This Sharingan technique is used by Tobi and Kakashi in Naruto Shippuden. The attack sucks an object or person into a pocket dimension with the use of a Mangekyo Sharingan eye. This can also be used on the actual user of the eye to teleport away from danger.

6. Special Beam Cannon
This DBZ classic stole our hearts with its spiraling yellow death glow. Used with only two fingers, Piccolo pierced both Goku and Raditz when he fired it. Later in the series, several copy-cats mimicked this technique.

7. Kendo
This style means everything in the hands of Kenpachi Zaraki and Afro. Both swordsman only use one hand to sling their respective blades, because it's "always enough." However, like Afro, Kenpachi faced an enemy that required a two-hand grip on his sword. When in both hands, these warriors transcend to untouchable MFWIC, because they are simply unbeatable in such form.

8. Eight Gates
Taught by Might Guy, Rock Lee learns this technique because he has no ninjutsu or genjustsu. He must rely completely on taijutsu, and the Eight Gates play to that strength. Unfortunately, due to his noble lifestyle, the only way for Rock Lee to become a MFWIC is to unlock all gates, and that means dying in his own chakra fire. For now, he must stick with the first six gates.

9. Spirit Bomb
Another DBZ classic on the list, the Spirit Bomb is used only in emergencies. The best attempts were against Frieza (which failed) and Kib Buu (success). The Spirit Bomb takes the energy from all living things to form a behemoth of deadly goodness.

10. Ryujin Jakka
In the amine realm, Head Captain Yamamoto is quite possibly the king of MFWIC's. He is a ruthless leader with Ryujin Jakka, the sword that"burns all things to ashes." Unfortunately, Bleach was cancelled before the bankai is revealed, BUT the shikai will do. The heat in this zanpakuto is almost unfathomable. Its power surrounds Yamamoto in flames and can create ENORMOUS pillars of fire that threaten even the most powerful enemies of the Soul Society.

Which techniques do you think should be on the list?
